Brenton joined the Department of Social Services in October 2018, serving in roles as Group Manager for pensions, welfare, and housing and homelessness. He was recently appointed to the role of Group Manager, Families, where he is responsible for family and children’s policy, and family safety, including; leading the Australian Government’s work on the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children, the National Plan to Reduce Violence against women and their children and managing grants supporting Australian families and children.

With over twenty years service in the Australian Public Service, Brenton has performed roles in energy policy, where he was responsible for gas market development, policy oversight of the energy market institutions, and the secretariat for the COAG Energy Council. He was also seconded to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet as part of the COVID-19 Taskforce, and the Prime Minister’s Office as interim senior advisor, energy and resources.

Prior to this, Brenton has a long career with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in a number of senior executive roles including general manager of the ACCC’s inquiry into the east coast gas market, enforcement operations including introduction and repeal of the carbon tax scheme, and compliance.

Brenton is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and has a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from James Cook University.
